WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
What is a swimmer's ear?
Swimmer's ear, known as otitis externa, is a condition that occurs when the outer ear canal becomes irritated or infected. It typically occurs when water, often from swimming or bathing, becomes trapped in the ear canal, creating a moist environment for bacterial growth. This can lead to inflammation, pain, and infection.
Common symptoms
Symptoms may include:
- Ear pain or tenderness, often worsening when the earlobe is pulled or pressed
- Itching or discomfort in the ear canal
- Redness and swelling of the outer ear
- Drainage of clear, pus-like fluid from the ear
- Decreased hearing or a sensation of fullness in the ear
